Wakelyns organic garlic has now sold out for this year, sorry! The perfect accompaniment to our beans (or peas or lentils or...): a few cloves (or a whole bulb) slowly cooked with your soaked pulses, some stock, a few herbs… |
RealVeg work a few alleys between the fruit trees near the farmhouse at Wakelyns. The CSA structure they use means their customers take a simple share of the harvest, to share the risks and the rewards of growing. They also help on the land, planting, weeding, harvesting. Not customers in the usual sense - it’s a brilliant way of doing things.
This year and last year RealVeg set aside a bit of ground to grow garlic. In the spirit of the CSA model we've agreed to share the risk - whatever they grow, we’ll buy. They grew A LOT, but it turns out lots of people wanted delicious garlic (some even made it up to Small Food Bakery in Nottingham), so the ‘risk’ wasn’t such a risk after all - it was more a promise that enabled something brilliant to happen.
Do you want to share the reward with us? We have a few hundred bulbs available - order while stocks last!
And if you’d like to find out more about CSA check out the CSA Network UK. Another great working example of a CSA is Norwich Farmshare. We think of Norwich FarmShare as our sister enterprise as, like Hodmedod, they grew out of the Norwich Resilient Food Project, a community-led effort to create a more diverse, resilient food system for Norwich.
Wakelyns garlic is deliciously aromatic and pungent. Use like any garlic bulb.

One of Britain's best-kept secrets, Carlin Peas (available dried, canned and jarred) are a much-loved traditional food in the North of England and make a great alternative to chickpeas, with excellent flavour and texture. |
Our Black Badgers are a classic brown Carlin Pea, also know as Black or Grey Peas and popularly served as Parched Peas in Lancashire, simply boiled up and eaten with vinegar and salt.
With their firm texture and delicious nutty flavour, Carlin Peas make an excellent British substitute for chickpeas.
Why not also try our Red Fox Carlin Peas, a lighter coloured red-brown variety, our canned Carlin Peas in Water or Bold Bean Co's Queen Carlin Peas?

Split Fava Beans are tasty, versatile and easy to cook - they don’t even need soaking.
Use our Organic Split Fava Beans to make dal, falafel or hummus - or add a handful or more to soups, stews or curries. The beans get softer and softer the longer they're cooked.
Or try our new Fava Bean Chips - they're cheaper than Split Fava Beans and cook just the same only a little faster.

Britain's original bean, the fava bean is delicious, nutritious and good for the soil. Our Organic Whole Fava Beans are perfect for spicy Egyptian ful medames, truly British baked beans, stews, curries, salads and more.
Our current crop of whole fava beans were grown on the Balcaskie Estate in Scotland, They're the unusually small, round and wonderfully tender Maris Bead variety, bred over 50 years ago at the Plant Breeding Institute on Maris Lane near Cambridge.
Whether they're cooked from dry or used canned, we think these are our best ever whole fava.
