We've teamed up with Bold Bean Co to offer our classic carlin peas in jars, cooked to perfection and ready to use. One of Britain's best-kept secrets, Carlin Peas are a much-loved traditional food in the North of England and make a great alternative to chickpeas, with excellent flavour and texture. |
Bold Bean sent our classic British-grown Black Badger Carlin Peas to their expert Spanish preservers, who have perfectly cooked and jarred them in their salty stock.
Also know as Black or Grey Peas, Carlin Peas are traditionally eaten as Parched Peas in Lancashire, simply boiled up and served with vinegar and salt. With their firm texture and delicious nutty flavour, Carlin Peas make an excellent British substitute for chickpeas.
We also sell dried Organic Black Badger Carlin Peas, Red Fox Carlin Peas (a lighter coloured red-brown variety) and our canned Organic Carlin Peas in Water.

Carlin Peas have a superb nutty flavour and firm texture, making a great alternative to chickpeas. They're great in soups, stews, curries and salad, pairing well with roast vegetables.
Drain and rinse or use complete with their salty liquor. The peas are ready to use, hot or cold. Add to stews, curries, salads or use to make hummus. To heat, add to cooked dish and heat through for 1 to 2 minutes.

Grown in the Britain for at least 500 years, Carlin Peas are also know as Black Badgers or Maple Peas. In Lancashire they're traditionally served "parched" - boiled and roast or soaked in vinegar - on Bonfire Night. They're celebrated in parts of Yorkshire on Carlin Sunday, the fifth Sunday in Lent, and know as Grey Peas in the Black Country, where they're often served with bacon.
Carlin Peas are also popular with pigeons (and carp!) and occasionally known as Pigeon Peas but they're not to be confused with the entirely different tropical species Cajanus cajan, also popularly known as the Pigeon Pea.
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

As a longtime fan of Hodmedod’s I’ve been waiting for this book to arrive and gift to friends and family. No longer will there be a bag of dried peas languishing at the back of the cupboard or any procrastinating over what to do with my fava beans. This book is stuffed with delicious-sounding recipes and beautiful photographs that I want to make and share with others. There are lots of comfort food ideas which is just what I crave in the colder months as well as lighter recipes; all of them full of flavour, fibre and protein. It’s an interesting, though-provoking read even if you don’t do much cooking and left me feeling joyful, inspired and thankful that the need for and appreciation of diversity is expressed and runs richly through this book.
Your book offers recipes inspired by cooking styles from around the world while using your diverse range of British ingredients. I would like to try the different flat breads made with rye, emmer, buckwheat and pea flour. This book contributes to helping people eat better and cook their own food with ingredients grown with care for the land. Thank you 🤩
This granola is delicious, especially with blueberries and banana and topped with yoghurt or coconut kefir. I’ll definitely be buying again :).
I used these to make humous for the first time. I swear it tastes almost exactly the same as when made with chickpeas and so much nicer than shop bought. Very smooth and takes on the garlic and lemon flavours beautifully. Will use for dips again in the future.
Extremely tasty rye flour with a sweet malty taste. Mixed half and half with white spelt flour, it gives a loaf with great depth of flavour and nice, springy texture. Makes great toast.
