Naked Barley Porridge

Naked Barley Porridge

Naked Barley Flakes make perfect porridge - just substitute them for rolled oats in your favourite porridge recipe. We like to add a couple of tablespoons of Chia Seeds too. Here's our simple porridge recipe…

The nutty, malty flavour of Naked Barley Flakes makes for a tasty and sustaining porridge.

Naked barley flakes provide a very nutritious breakfast. They're a rich source of complex carbohydrates, particularly beta-glucan soluble fibre which has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels. They have a high protein level too, often 15% more protein than normal barley, and a low glycemic index.

For an extra boost of flavour and nutrition, why not add a couple of tablespoons of our British chia seeds to your porridge?

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 100g Naked Barley Flakes
  • 2 tbsp Chia Seeds (optional)
  • 600ml Milk or Water - or mix to taste
  • Pinch Salt
  • Maple Syrup, Sugar or Honey to sweeten
  • Milk or Yoghurt, Chopped Fresh or Dried Fruit to serve (optional)

Method

  1. Put the naked barley flakes in a saucepan, add the milk/water and a pinch of salt
  2. Bring to the boil, then simmer over a low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally
  3. (Alternatively mix the ingredients in a microwave-proof bowl and microwave for 10 minutes, stirring every 2 to 3 minutes)
  4. Cover and stand for 5 minutes before serving
  5. Serve in bowls, perhaps with some chopped fruit and a little milk or yoghurt, and sweeten to taste

The most enjoyable porridge ever. The perfect comfort food for me, with the added pleasure of knowing it’s sustainably grown, and good for the gut.

30g naked barley flakes, 75ml fresh whole milk, 125ml water simmered gently until the liquid evaporated and served with a plum & honey compote for breakfast and it was gorgeous. All locally sourced. Reminded me of the porridge my mother cooked when I was much younger.

Really enjoyed this barley flake porridge and made a variation on it, using coconut milk – delicious.
