Introducing Barleybird, a community interest company building understanding of agroecology and working to change food systems. |
Last year we set up a not-for-profit sister organisation called Barleybird, with a mission is to build on Hodmedod's work and purpose: to collaborate with farmers, growers, businesses and communities to achieve systemic changes to the way food is grown, distributed and eaten. To effect changes that are good for our health and wellbeing and good for the planet.
At Hodmedod the principles of agroecology inform and steer our work. Barleybird exists in large part to build wider understanding of agroecology and, through education and the sharing of knowledge, to use that understanding to create the capacity to empower, engage and change food systems.
Agroecology is more than just an approach to farming, it weaves agriculture and ecology with social and economic principles, celebrates cultural diversity, the sharing of knowledge to nurture and support the transition to a just and equitable system where food is grown and shared in a way which does not exceed the limits of the earth's resources.
📆 Interested in learning more about agroecology? Keep an eye on Barleybird's events, training and workshops.
🐤 What is a barleybird? Barleybird is a old Suffolk word for nightingale, a threatened species of bird, whose habitat and the insects it feeds on have been much reduced in the last century, but could be recovered through agroecological practices.

Solidarity Trade started as a group of friends that, through a shared dream and commitment to food sovereignty, decided to bring the Kayapó’s Brazil nuts to the UK for the first time. We knew we had to create a supply chain that defied the status quo, built on a foundation of friendship. We had to start developing an economy rooted in love.
