EAT NUTS / SUPPORT THE KAYAPO / SAVE THE FOREST
Brazil nuts traded direct from the Kayapó in the Brazilian Amazon.
Our new consignment of amazing PI'Y Brazil nuts direct from Kayapó cooperative COOBA-Y arrived by ship in early November and are now packed and ready for the last leg of their journey - to you.

The Landworkers' Alliance, Roddick Foundation, Hodmedod and Kayapó-led cooperative COOBA-Y have come together to build a new direct trade relationship in solidarity with the Indigenous fight for survival, bringing wild-harvested nuts directly from the Kayapó people of Brazil to the UK for the first time.

By buying PI'Y - the Kayapó name for Brazil nuts - you’re strengthening the Kayapó people, their culture and the Amazon rainforest they protect and depend on. Trading the nuts provides financial autonomy for around 600 families in over 50 Kayapó villages and helps protect Indigenous lands - 40,000 square miles of rainforest.

Not as good as hoped

I bought 2 x 1 kg packs of these. Both packs were stored in the fridge immediately on arrival. Although it's nice to be eating organic, these nuts are not spectacularly fresh-smelling and -tasting as I had expected. So far one nut (out of 250 g) *was* clearly rancid, suggesting it was stored even less carefully than the rest.

Storage at room temperature causes Brazils to go off faster than does storage at fridge temperature (about 5 degC) or even UK ambient temperature (averaging about 10 degC). Brazils are high in polyunsaturated fats which degrade faster than saturated fat. So I'm asking for a lot more care to be taken in storage. Big question ... are they refrigerated after they arrive in Suffolk and until someone places an order? If they're not, could that be the problem?

Hodmedod isn't alone. I bought some (non-organic) Brazil nuts elsewhere in 2024. They were stored in a fridge but all were detectably rancid months before the 'use by' date. Until 2024, (non-organic) Brazil nuts purchased from that store had been universally fresh-tasting and delicious.

I'm merely a customer who knows quite a lot of biochemistry. Hodmedod should be the 'professional' in this respect. It should know better than I do how to keep food products fresh.
